August is a month of transitions for my family. School has started for my boys and my summer quarter is over. Since I’ve been tracking my reading for a few years I’ve noticed that August is a hard reading month for me.1 Monday night I came home from an evening event at work and nothing sounded interesting enough to pick up. I pay attention to that because reading is something I love.2 However, yesterday I stopped by our local bookstore and picked up three books (two used and one new) to take on our upcoming vacation. I got Station Eleven, though does anyone need a dystopian novel about a flu pandemic that wipes out civilization? Maybe not. I also got The Last Thing He Told Me because several people have talked it up lately and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow because I’ve been waiting on it since my last trip to the bookstore.

Run with the Horses by Eugene Peterson
I loaned this to a friend at work and when he returned it, I decided I should read it before putting it back in my stack of Peterson books that have a place of honor on top of the bookshelf. It’s one of my favorites and much of it is underlined. It reminds me of what it means to live fully alive, fully awake.
