I started assembling this post last month and my Hebrew final took me out. It’s just proof that March is, in fact, something unlike other months.1
Last year on my birthday, I started a five year, one-line-a-day journal.2 It’s hard to start a new habit and March of last year is mostly blank. I worked to stay caught up this year, but it was harder than the other months.
Thanks to Plough, I read some of Rhina Espaillat’s poetry. Maybe start here or here. Do you like poetry? One of my best friends does not but I have always loved it. I filled notebooks with awful, but necessary, poetry as a child. I still write some and I hope I always do.
I loved this episode of The Habit. I just finished a book for my Pastoral Ministry class on the pastor as poet and I love that Drew is both.3
Just the opening sentence of this is worth the read.
I will always love pieces about reading.
Nonsense poetry is better in a British accent. I shared this with my eight-year-old and I might have loved it even more than he did.
You can probably expect an episode of this podcast every month.
I also enjoyed this conversation. Conversation podcasts are my favorite.
Fuller has great resources. I’ve been thrilled with my choice of seminary.
If you’ve gotten caught up in the furor over Beautiful Union, this piece by Beth Felker Jones is excellent.
When I work I need music with no lyrics. I thought that was it until I tried to listen to an instrumental version of Midnights and realized I was singing all of the songs in my head. This, however, was perfectly amazing.
We are going to a dance with friends and I bought this to wear.
What has caught your eye this month? Share it in the comments!
Don’t we normally say this about January or February? However, this is repeated for me so I’m going to pay attention.
I love it! It’s so fun to see things from last year that I might not remember.
Poetry is a theme, friend. Maybe we’re going to lean in here this year.
Lisa, congrats on finishing Hebrew. It must feel amazing. What classes are you taking this quarter. Also, have you taken or will you take Greek?
I loved this list of writing advice: https://news.lettersofnote.com/p/nobody-ever-became-a-writer-just?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
I also love to read about books and reading and enjoyed this article about how Barack Obama picks his book recommendations and speculating on whether or not he really reads the books he recommends: https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/a43530028/barack-obama-reading-list/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
Loved that Fuller article
